Mobile App & Design System
Challenge
Bringing the native experience into alignment.
Our team took over the Canvas LMS native applications during a period of significant technical and design change. The existing frameworks and design tools were changing, while inconsistencies between native and hybrid content affected the experience. Dark-mode support also needed attention to improve readability and consistency across screens.
Solution
Redesigning the apps and rebuilding the system.
The redesign followed a mobile-first approach and aligned the interfaces with current platform guidelines. We addressed inconsistencies between native and hybrid content, rebuilt the design system in Figma using variants and Auto Layout, and designed a dark theme with attention to contrast, readability and usability.
Outcome
A more consistent design foundation.
The work brought the native-app interfaces and design system into closer alignment. Reusable Figma components and layout patterns provided a more structured foundation for ongoing design, while the dark theme addressed readability and contrast across the interface. The redesign also established shared practices for continued collaboration between design and development.
Canvas Offline
Challenge
Learning with limited connectivity and storage.
Students and educators need access to course materials even when an internet connection is unreliable. On devices with limited storage, downloading everything isn't practical either. The challenge was to make offline learning dependable while giving users control over what they store on their devices.
Solution
Selective downloads and reliable syncing.
We designed an offline experience that allowed users to download selected course materials and access them without a connection. Syncing handled updates when connectivity returned, while selective downloads helped users manage limited device storage. The aim was to make offline access useful without requiring users to keep unnecessary content on their devices.
Outcome
Access to learning materials offline.
The design enabled learners to access downloaded course materials without a live connection and manage storage more selectively. Syncing supported updates when they reconnected. Together, these capabilities addressed two practical barriers to learning on mobile devices: unreliable connectivity and limited storage.
